Satellites and spaceports behind drone warfare

Drone operations depend on communications capacity, with fixed-front fibre links, satellite bandwidth and autonomous-system oversight imposing different constraints.

Notes

Large drone inventories depend on communications infrastructure beyond the vehicles themselves. Fibre-optic links can work around relatively fixed Ukrainian front lines, while mobile or global operations place different demands on command links. Commercial satellite bandwidth is described as frequently reaching capacity even before active interference is considered. Sovereign launch infrastructure could help Britain expand or replace the satellites on which its forces depend. Autonomous systems would still require monitoring, because a communications link also creates a possible route for hostile interference. Buying vehicles therefore leaves unresolved questions about bandwidth, operator numbers and control capacity.
