The Italian San Giorgio class fits substantial amphibious utility into roughly 8,000 tons. The ships carry troops, tanks or armoured vehicles, landing craft, and several helicopters while retaining guns for local defence and support. Removing the forward 76 mm gun from two ships enlarged their flight decks, making the trade between aviation space and armament visible. Italy's much larger planned replacements show how the mission expands as navies demand more aviation, lift, and endurance.
