Salamine began as the Spanish Infante before French capture and renaming and entered the 1799 action as an eighteen-gun brig. HMS Emerald was a heavily armed Amazon-class frigate commissioned in 1795 with 18-pounders and 32-pounder carronades. She reached Aboukir Bay too late for the Battle of the Nile but later served under Duckworth, in Caribbean operations, and at the Battle of Basque Roads. Emerald remained in Royal Navy service until 1836, giving the fleet roughly forty-one years of use. The paired biographies contrast the shifting identity of a small prize with the long reach of a durable purpose-built frigate.
