Small craft at the St Nazaire raid

Operation Chariot demonstrates how Fairmiles and motor torpedo boats supported a combined raid to deny St Nazaire's great dry dock to German capital ships.

Notes

Operation Chariot combined the explosive-packed destroyer HMS Campbeltown with Fairmile B launches, a Fairmile C gunboat, MTB 74, Hunt-class escorts, and commandos. The target was the only dry dock outside Germany able to accommodate a major ship such as Tirpitz, making its destruction relevant to Atlantic-convoy security. The small craft carried assault troops, fought through the defended Loire estuary, launched delayed-action torpedoes, and attempted to recover survivors. The bomber diversion became counterproductive because cloud cover met no clear contingency plan, and the activity alerted defenders instead of keeping their heads down. Heavy losses show how a sound combined-operations concept could still become chaotic under searchlights, gunfire, and withdrawal pressure.
