Safety testing must account for real users

A standard test can miss people and conditions outside the model it uses.

Notes

Crash-test dummies show the limits of legal compliance as a measure of safety. Standardized models make testing possible, but can miss variations in body shape, size, sex, age, and vulnerability. Companies that test beyond the standard model expose their products to a broader range of real occupants. Maritime safety poses the same question: has a nominally compliant design been tested against the people, failures, and conditions it will actually face?
