Ryujo and the limits of a miniature fleet carrier

The Ryujo example links excessive air-group ambition to weight growth, then proposes small scout carriers to relieve cruiser aviation duties.

Notes

Ryujo supplies the example of trying to put a fleet-carrier air group into a small hull. The attempted outfit is 48 aircraft, while making the ship viable brings its stated displacement up to 10,600 tons. The scenario expects Japan to try that demanding approach before recognizing the value of a more modest scout carrier. Aircraft and scouting duties already consume space and weight on Japanese cruisers and compromise their other work. Moving those duties to dedicated small carriers would address that problem. The United States is imagined reaching the same choice after its own unsuccessful attempt at a miniature fleet carrier.
