Rutland's radio failure exposed command limits at Jutland

Rutland's failed attempt to repair an airborne wireless set shows how reconnaissance could outrun the means to report it.

Notes

Rutland's failed airborne radio at Jutland illustrates the gap between observing an enemy and reporting that observation. In the account here, he landed on the sea during the battle to try to repair the set before taking off again. Shipboard communications benefited from room for duplicate sets and large aerials, although exposed aerials could still be shot away. The wireless equipment being discussed used Morse, so an intact connection also required a surviving trained operator. Land forces could not assume that such skills were widely available.
