Russia's early fast-battleship compromise

The closing historical aside describes an early Russian 24-knot battleship concept that accepted lighter armour to obtain its speed.

Notes

Russian designers pursued a 24-knot battleship before fast battleships became a wider ambition. The proposal accepted lighter armour as the price of higher speed. Speed could not simply be added to an otherwise unchanged battleship design. The tradeoff shows how greater mobility forces reconsideration of displacement, machinery, protection, or some combination of them.
