Russian turret layouts left unusual room for modernization

Low, evenly spaced turret arrangements simplified access to magazines and machinery and could have supported major gun or machinery upgrades.

Notes

Russian dreadnoughts placed four turrets on one level and carried relatively little superstructure. Their engines and magazines sat beneath clearly separated parts of the hull, leaving fewer obstructions around the main machinery and weapon spaces. That arrangement could make major rebuilding easier than on ships with tightly interlocked upper works. The same simplicity that looked austere in 1914 left useful room for interwar modernization.
