The Admiral Ushakov class far from its Baltic coast

Russia's Admiral Ushakov-class ships show the consequences of sending coastal battleships across the world to Tsushima.

Notes

Designed as Russia's last coastal-defence battleships, the Admiral Ushakov class combined three or four 10-inch guns with heavy Harvey armor and a 16-knot top speed. During the Russo-Japanese War they nevertheless sailed from the Baltic through the Suez Canal to join the Third Pacific Squadron. At Tsushima their limited speed and improvised oceanic employment exposed the mismatch between a regional design and a global deployment: Admiral Ushakov was lost, while Admiral Seniavin and Admiral General Apraksin surrendered and entered Japanese service.
