Royal Sovereigns as a practical transition

The Royal Sovereigns’ seaworthiness, freeboard, armament layout, and balanced design mark a meaningful step in battleship development.

Notes

The Royal Sovereign class is presented as a genuinely ocean-going design with enough freeboard to work in heavy seas. Its fore-and-aft 13.5-inch armament, substantial secondary battery, and the turreted variation HMS Hood reveal a class still negotiating the transition from earlier low-freeboard ironclads. Centurion, Renown, and the later Majestics make it difficult to name the whole era after a single successor class. The Royal Sovereigns nevertheless provide a practical starting point because they combine seaworthiness, firepower, and protection in a balanced fleet battleship.
