Why was HMS Royal Sovereign chosen for loan to the Soviet Union?
Short answerShe was the only reasonable available ship after Britain withheld its strongest battleships and excluded worn or otherwise committed alternatives.
NotesThe loan required a ship useful enough to satisfy the Soviet claim without transferring one of Britain's best capital ships. Rebuilt Queen Elizabeths, Renown, Nelson, and the King George V class were too capable to hand over. Malaya, Resolution, and Revenge were worn or already in reserve, while Ramillies had been refitted for another purpose. That process of elimination left Royal Sovereign as the reasonable choice and limited what the recipient could do with the transfer.
