Sir John Williams designed the six-ship Royal Oak class after the Elizabeth class, within the continuing development of British 74s. The class comprised Royal Oak, Conqueror, Bedford, Hector, Vengeance, and Sultan. Royal Oak was ordered in 1765 and launched in 1769, and her eventual disposal came in 1815. Her battle record included Grenada, Cape Henry, Chesapeake, and the Saintes. This long career placed the same hull in several distinct fleet campaigns.
