Should current Royal Navy warships carry twin 4.5-inch turrets, or at least one such mount?
Short answerYes; peer combat and naval gunfire support reward greater sustained high-explosive firepower.
NotesTwin medium-gun mounts would be useful because combat against a peer can demand more high explosive in a shorter time. The Falklands War supplies an example of the continuing demand for naval gunfire support. Ships can support landings and subsequent operations ashore. Greater gun capacity is proposed as a way of sustaining that support. A later comparison favours shellfire when bombardment must continue for two or three days, a demand for which missiles alone may be inadequate.
