John McLean's A Mission of Honour covers the Royal Navy in the Pacific from 1769 to 1997. Alex Clarke recalls pairing a passage from that history with a chapter from Peacekeepers of Sol when asked to cover a class at short notice. Students compare the methodologies of the historical account and the fictional treatment. He uses the pairing as a starting point before taking the class to more modern examples.
