Royal Navy heavy gunfire shaped fighting along the North African coast

Axis forces approaching the coast risked coming within range of British battleships and other heavy naval guns supporting the army.

Notes

A German advance toward the Suez Canal would also confront heavy naval gunfire. Nelson-class battleships and other Royal Navy units could move along the coast and bombard positions within reach of the sea. The navy routinely brought heavy firepower to support the army during the North African campaign. Coastal geography therefore turned naval gunfire into a recurring operational constraint on land forces.
