The Royal Navy could leave 15-inch ships behind

Queen Elizabeth-class and Revenge-class availability shows the Royal Navy’s unusual depth in modern 15-inch capital ships.

Notes

Malaya and Revenge fought at Jutland, while Queen Elizabeth was refitting after the Dardanelles and other 15-inch ships remained unavailable, fitting out, or judged insufficiently trained. The point is not that availability did not matter, but that Britain possessed enough depth to avoid rushing every powerful ship into the battle. Royal Sovereign could be withheld for crew inexperience, while Resolution and Ramillies were allowed to complete their work rather than being hurried forward. This reserve of completed or nearly completed capital ships magnified the German fleet’s numerical problem and demonstrated confidence in the Grand Fleet already assembled.
