Cruiser movements and repairs shape the River Plate concentration

Dorsetshire and Cumberland were already preparing or moving before the battle, with repair stops and Atlantic distances controlling when reinforcements could arrive.

Notes

The River Plate confrontation emerged within a wider movement of British ships already tasked with destroying the surface raider. HMS Dorsetshire reached Simon's Town on 9 December and sailed on 13 December after preparing for a prolonged Atlantic deployment. Cumberland reached Port Stanley on 9 December for self-repair, then sailed on 13 December and reached the River Plate on 14 December. The damaged Exeter arrived at Port Stanley on 16 December after the battle. Graf Spee therefore faced reinforcements beyond Harwood's three cruisers, but those ships needed time to prepare and cross substantial distances. Repair access and endurance governed when each cruiser could join or leave the concentration.
