Why did the Royal Navy not buy Charles F. Adams-class destroyers as Australia and West Germany did?
Short answerBritain did not dislike the design; preserving domestic warship construction made a foreign purchase politically untenable.
NotesBuying foreign-built combatants would have removed orders from British yards and provoked a major political backlash. Even ordering fleet auxiliaries abroad has threatened governments, so importing front-line destroyers was effectively impossible. The Royal Navy therefore continued building ships around its own industrial base and requirements.
