Nicholas Rodger's The Safeguard of the Sea covers Britain's naval history from 660 to 1649. Command of the Ocean receives praise for combining a great deal of information and setting a standard for studying its period. The earlier history is nevertheless the preferred read here: the later volume repeatedly approaches the same events through different subjects. Medieval naval history also presents considerable complexity despite the earlier book's smaller size. Its illustrations include a fourteenth-century lighthouse.
