A single embarked helicopter has to divide its time between patrol and alert duties, and it can exhaust its torpedo load during a prosecution. Type 07 VL-ASROC carries a Type 97 or Type 12 torpedo about 30 kilometers from the ship, giving Maya another way to attack a submarine. A helicopter can pass targeting data back instead of leaving its patrol area to fetch more weapons. The destroyer can also place several torpedoes around a difficult contact before it closes within effective attack range. Spending ASROC rounds is a sound trade when the alternatives are thinner airborne coverage or greater danger to the ship.

Rocket-assisted torpedoes offset a one-helicopter limit
Maya's long-range ASROC gives the ship another way to attack a submarine when its single helicopter is unavailable or out of weapons.
