RMS Scythia's long service from liner to troopship

RMS Scythia served for 38 years as an Atlantic liner, troopship, war-bride carrier, and refugee transport.

Notes

Cunard built Scythia as an intermediate liner after wartime losses, trading the scale of the largest prestige ships for flexible Atlantic and Mediterranean service. During the Second World War she carried troops, survived an aerial torpedo during Operation Torch, and later moved American troops and Canadian war brides. Postwar work for refugee organizations and the transport of Hungarian refugees extended her public-service career until 1958. Her 38-year career was not surpassed within Cunard service until Queen Elizabeth 2. Merchant liners could become strategic transport assets while still serving as national status symbols.
