Interwar landing-craft designs carried the early wartime workload

Small numbers of interwar landing craft served in several early campaigns and suffered heavy losses while providing the design foundation for wartime expansion.

Notes

Landing craft of 1920s and 1930s design lineage carried much of the workload at Narvik, Dunkirk, and Dieppe. When war began, MLCs and some LCMs served in the Mediterranean as well as home waters. Few of these early craft survived beyond 1941 or 1942. Their wartime service demonstrated the usefulness of the designs from which larger landing-craft fleets developed.
