UN peacekeeping plans rediscover river forces late

Peacekeeping missions have sometimes arrived without river craft and then made emergency purchases after learning how much local movement and commerce depend on waterways.

Notes

United Nations peacekeeping plans have sometimes overlooked the rivers in the areas where forces would deploy. A mission may then discover that local commerce and security depend heavily on waterborne movement. The problem includes both finding suitable boats and getting them into the area. Emergency purchases can follow months after deployment, with roughly six months used as an example. This is a force-planning problem that knowledge of local transport routes should expose before arrival.
