Ammunition and escape constraints at River Plate

Any alternative River Plate decision still had to account for ammunition already spent on commerce raiding, the northward voyage, and British forces alerted by contact reports.

Notes

Better scouting still left Graf Spee with serious strategic constraints. The raider had already expended shells and torpedoes against merchant shipping. Her remaining supplies were adequate, but Langsdorff needed to reserve ammunition for possible further encounters with British forces during the journey north. A battle at the River Plate could consume more of those stocks before he reached home. Even if he fought his way clear, British ships could signal his position to other forces. The British forces shown on the map explain why escaping one encounter would still leave him at risk of interception.
