The River class survived wartime service far better than it survived postwar preservation. Of 151 completed frigates, only five were lost during the war, so a sailor assigned to the class had a comparatively strong chance of surviving the conflict. The surviving paperwork raises a separate puzzle: the located order records account for fewer ships than were completed, a discrepancy left unresolved. Australia preserved HMAS Diamantina, the only River-class ship said here to survive in substantially original condition. The preservation gap shows how easily the everyday ships of naval campaigns can disappear from public memory even when many survive the war.
