A reverse Pearl Harbor would hit Japan harder

Reversing the fleets would leave Japan unable to replace a battle line destroyed by six American carriers.

Question

What if the Japanese and American forces at Pearl Harbor were reversed?

Short answer

Japan would probably lose its battle line and lack the industrial capacity to recover, even if its carriers remained available.

Notes

The counterfactual places Japan's eight battleships in harbor and gives the United States the six carriers available in 1941: Lexington, Saratoga, Ranger, Yorktown, Hornet, and Enterprise. A concentrated American strike could destroy or disable the Japanese battle line while leaving Japan with its carriers. Carrier warfare might continue, but the Imperial Japanese Navy could not regenerate battleships at the rate the United States recovered from Pearl Harbor. The same tactical loss would therefore carry very different strategic consequences for the two industrial systems. Japan would probably be knocked out of effective contention much earlier.
