The Revenge class and the danger of cut-price capital ships

The Revenge class accepted lower speed, but its planned eight-ship scale and retained 15-inch armament partly compensated for the compromise.

Question

Were the Revenge-class battleships cut-price capital ships?

Short answer

To a degree, but their planned numbers and 15-inch guns softened the loss of capability; more Queen Elizabeths would have been preferable.

Notes

The Revenge class accepted less speed than the Queen Elizabeths while retaining 15-inch guns. Plans for eight ships partly compensated for the reduction in individual capability by increasing the number of heavily armed battleships. The preferred alternative is another eight Queen Elizabeths. A more ambitious version of that preference adds four triple 15-inch turrets, oil firing, and higher-pressure boilers for a proposed 28 knots. These are retrospective design choices intended to increase British capability and put greater pressure on rival navies.
