Ships now grouped as pre-dreadnoughts were simply battleships to the people who built and operated them. The label only makes sense from a viewpoint after Dreadnought. Super-dreadnought, by contrast, was used in the period for successive generations of larger-gunned battleships. The term later became associated especially with the Queen Elizabeth class, so modern categories mix contemporary language with labels applied in hindsight.
