Chapter ยท 31:22-32:10

Retired officers reinforced convoy and reserve commands

The wartime Navy drew heavily on retired captains and admirals as convoy commodores and commanders of smaller escort vessels.

Notes

Retirement did not necessarily mean leaving naval work. Experienced officers entered various reserve arrangements, became convoy commodores, or commanded trawlers and corvettes. Retired captains often received smaller escort vessels, while former flag officers could carry responsibility for whole convoys. The Navy drew heavily on this pool to expand the number of experienced leaders available for the escort and shipping system.
