A compartment declared as storage could be sized for additional boilers or a turbine. Boilers are the easier addition when another turbine would require alignment with a propeller shaft. Turbo-electric drive changes that constraint because electric motors turn the shafts. Extra generating machinery can then feed the propulsion system without adding another direct mechanical connection to a shaft. The resulting speed increase remains conditional on available hull space and a ship designed to use the extra power.

Why electric drive helps a ship accept extra machinery
Reserved machinery space is easier to exploit when turbo-electric propulsion separates turbines from the propeller shafts.
