How Royal Navy hunter groups could neutralise a raider

River Plate, a North Atlantic near miss, and a counterfactual encounter with the 4th Destroyer Flotilla show how damage alone could neutralise a German surface raider.

Notes

The Battle of the River Plate leads into the Royal Navy's wider plan for hunting German surface raiders. Exeter and two Leander-class cruisers damaged Graf Spee enough to force her into Montevideo, while Cumberland and the prospect of Renown and Ark Royal narrowed her options if she sailed again. A North Atlantic near miss also brought Deutschland close to a full County-class cruiser and two Town-class cruisers. The Indian Ocean counterfactual puts Graf Spee against eight Tribal-class destroyers of the 4th Destroyer Flotilla, whose speed, 4.7-inch gunfire, and torpedoes from several bearings could leave the raider unable to escape. With no friendly repair base and British cruisers or carriers able to follow, a mission kill could end a raider's campaign without an immediate sinking.
