How would the Royal Navy use a brand-new Renown-class battlecruiser today?
Short answerAfter a major refit with gas turbines, VLS, helicopters, and modern sensors, it could serve as a fast and highly visible status ship.
NotesThe panel would retain Renown's forward 15-inch guns while converting the stern for helicopters and vertical-launch missiles. Modern sensors, fire control, and local air defence would replace much of the original combat system. Swapping the boilers for gas turbines would release internal space for the electronics and support equipment required by the new weapons. With four shafts and a hull already capable of 30 knots, the refitted ship is imagined reaching roughly 40 knots. It could then serve as a conspicuous solo presence ship or add speed and heavy visible firepower to a carrier group.
