Reloads and survivability in the small-ship debate

The case for many small warships must account for reloads, self-defence, and the ability to survive more than one incoming threat.

Question

Do one-shot modern weapons make many smaller ships preferable to larger warships?

Short answer

Not automatically: ships need reloads and layered self-defence, and a larger vessel may be better able to absorb or defeat an attack than a small one-shot platform.

Notes

The answer challenges the assumption that a potentially lethal weapon makes a smaller ship sufficient. A real engagement may demand several salvos, so magazine capacity and reloads remain central even when individual missiles are powerful. The ship also needs sensors and air-defence weapons to reach the conflict zone and return. A small one-shot platform may itself be destroyed by a single hit, whereas a larger vessel can carry more defensive layers and has a better chance of weathering the attack.
