Reliable turbines replace mixed destroyer machinery

Chasseur and Bouclier adopt turbines throughout, while differences in shafts, fuel capacity, and fuel quality still complicate performance comparisons.

Notes

The Voltigeur design combined a triple-expansion engine with two steam turbines, and that mixed arrangement caused difficulties. Turbines had become reliable enough for the Chasseur and Bouclier generations to use them throughout. Chasseur ships had three turbines driving three shafts, while most Bouclier ships used that arrangement and some had two turbines and two shafts. Fuel arrangements still varied: Cavalier burned coal, and Bouclier ships carried between about 120 and 160 tons of oil. Ships carrying 160 tons could usually reach 1,600 nautical miles, although the associated cruising speed remains uncertain. Fuel quality was still improving and becoming more standardized.
