Built around HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse, the British force may gain at least one carrier and one or two destroyer flotillas during the delay. HMS Renown is tentatively identified as the additional fast capital ship that had been offered, while a second carrier and cruisers are also possible. That would produce a more balanced task group than the one sent historically. Extra training time could also improve coordination between the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force. Even so, the reinforced group could tie down Kido Butai or perhaps damage it in a night attack, but it could not defeat the full Japanese carrier force in a pitched battle.
