Regimental tradition versus administrative scale

Reviving the Royal Irish Rangers would preserve a historic identity while worsening the administrative problems of single-battalion formations.

Question

Should the British Army bring back the Royal Irish Rangers?

Short answer

The historic identity is attractive, but reviving another regiment would worsen the administrative problem created by too many single-battalion formations.

Notes

There is an appeal in seeing several historic British Army regiments return, but the main reservation is structural. Many surviving infantry regiments are already only single-battalion organizations. Maintaining numerous separate cap badges at that scale creates an administrative burden and works against efforts to organize larger, more sustainable formations. Regimental tradition has value, though heritage alone cannot determine institutional design.
