Reeves combined escort duty with naval diplomacy

Reeves links carrier-aviation heritage, Operation Earnest Will tanker protection, and the first US Navy visit to China since 1949.

Notes

USS Reeves was named for Admiral Joseph Mason 'Bull' Reeves, known as the father of carrier aviation in the US Navy. Her later career included escort work during the 1987 Operation Earnest Will tanker-reflagging mission. In 1986 Reeves also led USS Rentz and USS Oldendorf into Qingdao for a six-day visit. It was the first US Navy port visit to China since the repair ship USS Dixie departed in 1949, showing how a cruiser could signal presence through protection and diplomatic access.
