Was USS Texas the first battleship to list deliberately so its guns could reach farther inland?
Short answerNo. Redoubtable used the same method against positions near Westende in 1915, long before Texas employed it off Normandy.
NotesUSS Texas was not the first battleship to list itself for greater gun elevation. Redoubtable, the renamed HMS Revenge, had already flooded an anti-torpedo bulge for that purpose in September 1915. Texas became more famous because her comparable maneuver supported the Normandy landings in 1944. The earlier example shows that crews had used controlled flooding as a practical range-extension measure decades before D-Day.
