Modernising the Italian battle line

Burzagli backed reconstruction of Italy's older battleships, treating modernisation as a way to retain useful capital ships rather than discard them.

Notes

Battleship reconstruction was one of Burzagli's main decisions as chief of staff. He pushed the rebuilding programme from 1927, linking his tenure to the Italian capital ships that later emerged from reconstruction. The policy retained and improved useful hulls as part of a modern battle line. It shows how an interwar navy could balance modernisation of existing ships against new construction.
