A reading path from sail to the dreadnought era

Three survey books are presented as a structured route through maritime conflict from the sixteenth century to 1914.

Notes

N. A. M. Rodger’s Command of the Ocean provides the starting point before three focused warfare-and-history surveys. The sequence runs from Jan Glete on 1500-1650 through Richard Harding on 1650-1830 to Lawrence Sondhaus on 1815-1914, with useful overlap at the period boundaries. Together the books trace naval professionalisation, major strategic conflicts, and the transition from sail through ironclads to dreadnoughts. The route gives institutions and long-term change their proper place instead of reducing naval history to a succession of famous battles.
