Readiness and modernisation shape harbour-attack survival

Taranto's wartime-ready and heavily modernised targets differed from the strategically surprised U.S. battle line at Pearl Harbor, complicating simple damage comparisons.

Notes

Readiness and ship condition help explain Italian survival. The ships at Taranto were already at war and generally closed up, even though prolonged alert duty could wear down crew performance. Littorio was modern, and the older Italian battleships had undergone extensive reconstruction comparable in the British fleet mainly to Queen Elizabeth, Valiant, and Renown. Many U.S. Standard-type battleships at Pearl Harbor had received less thorough interwar modernisation before being caught by both strategic and tactical surprise. The Italian defences still failed, but casualty and damage outcomes cannot be read from torpedo counts alone.
