The R-boat lineage grew from roughly 60-ton early craft to late variants of about 140-160 tons. The R 300 class could carry two 533 mm torpedo tubes, although torpedoes had been an optional fit on earlier boats. Mine-clearing and minelaying equipment overlapped because cranes, handling gear, and storage arrangements could support either task. The result was a flexible coastal vessel able to take on armed roles alongside its mine-warfare duties.
