HMS Rattler tests the screw against HMS Alecto

The Rattler-Alecto trials let the Royal Navy compare screw and paddle propulsion through towing, racing, efficiency, and service evidence.

Notes

HMS Rattler was built as an experimental screw sloop while the Admiralty was still uncertain about abandoning paddles. Her famous tug-of-war with the similar paddle steamer HMS Alecto was only one of several comparisons, alongside races, efficiency measurements, and maintenance observation. Equal coal and broadly comparable engines helped make the towing contest a meaningful propulsion test. Rattler then completed useful overseas service, making her part of the Royal Navy's broader habit of testing technologies before committing to major designs such as HMS Warrior.
