Ranger lacked room for wartime aircraft growth

Ranger achieved a large nominal air group on modest displacement, but its light flight deck, omitted torpedo facilities, and limited growth margin narrowed its wartime use.

Notes

USS Ranger could theoretically operate 76 aircraft, comparable to Lexington's air group on roughly half the displacement. Its light flight deck and three elevators provided substantial aircraft capacity, but the commissioned design omitted torpedo storage and a torpedo-bomber squadron. The light deck had little allowance for the heavier aircraft that naval aviation was already producing. Speed was another limitation, with an official maximum of 29.3 knots judged too slow for the preferred Pacific carrier role. Atlantic service against the Kriegsmarine was acceptable, while Mediterranean and Pacific deployment met resistance. Aircraft count alone therefore overstated the carrier's ability to meet wartime demands.
