Railways as the foundation of Russian mobilization

North-south links, a connection to the Trans-Siberian Railway, double tracking, and feeder roads could have made Russia easier to supply, mobilize, and industrialize.

Notes

One counterfactual proposes a reliable railway from Archangel through Russia, linked to the east-west Trans-Siberian route and double-tracked wherever possible. Subsidiary lines and improved roads would connect more regions to that trunk network. Such a system would provide another supply route, speed military mobilization, and support industrial growth. The ability to build competitive battleships would follow from stronger national transport capacity.
