Four 12-inch and eight 9.4-inch guns let the semi-dreadnought engage battleships, cruisers, and destroyers without requiring full-size dreadnought facilities. The mixed battery was less tidy than an all-big-gun layout, but it created useful layers of fire in the narrow Adriatic. Existing dock limits made that compromise especially relevant for Austria-Hungary. Producing more of these balanced ships may have suited the empire's geography better than pursuing prestige dreadnoughts.
