Once a target was acquired, rapid six-inch fire and the five-inch battery could maintain a dense stream of shells. The gunnery team could walk the range ladder as an opponent maneuvered, making escape from the beaten area harder. Radar control made this useful at maximum gun range. The same principle could break up incoming surface torpedo attacks while the attackers were still distant.

Brooklyn-class rapid fire could walk salvos across a target or disrupt torpedo attacks at range under radar control.
