Why Quincy was a logical nuclear-cruiser builder

The Fore River yard at Quincy had a long record building carriers, cruisers, and battleships, making it a logical builder for an unprecedented nuclear cruiser.

Notes

The Fore River yard at Quincy helped contain some of Long Beach's technical risk. The yard traced its history through Bethlehem Steel and later General Dynamics and remained active for more than a century. Its work included both USS Lexington carriers as well as cruisers and battleships, giving it experience with large, complicated warships. Choosing that builder meant the unfamiliar reactor and combat systems could be added to a shipbuilding program managed by a yard that already understood major naval construction.
