Quincy charges through crossfire and torpedo hits

Quincy's attempt to attack through a Japanese crossfire exposes the class's underwater vulnerability and ends with the bridge destroyed.

Notes

Quincy's crew was still coming to readiness when Japanese gunfire caught the ship between two columns. Her captain ordered a charge toward the eastern column, but torpedoes exploited the underwater weakness created by a protection scheme focused on shellfire. Quincy nevertheless fired salvos that hit Chōkai's chart room and came close to Admiral Mikawa. Further shell and torpedo hits devastated the bridge, silenced the guns, and left one helmsman trying unsuccessfully to beach the ship before she sank bow first.
